Facebook Rolling Out Pages-Only Feed

By Tim Petersen – Adweek

Amid the marketer outcry over their page posts reaching fewer News Feeds, Facebook said today that is has begun rolling out a “Pages Only” News Feed that will only contain content from the pages a user has liked. Inside Facebook reported last week that Facebook was testing the brand-friendly, filtered news feed, which will hit all users by the end of the day. Read more…

Led by Facebook, display ad buying becoming more of a real-time business

By Ki Mae Heussner – GigaOm

According to a new report from eMarketer, real-time bidding could account for a quarter of all digital ad spending by 2015. Among other factors, Facebook’s new ad exchange, FBX, is expected to drive much of that growth. Read more…

Facebook Finally Launches “Share” Button for the Mobile Feed, Its Version of “Retweet”

By Josh Constine – TechCrunch

Facebook has just confirmed with me that it is launching a retweet-style “Share” button for the mobile news feed. The much-requested feature is now rolled out for the mobile site, and will soon come to the iOS and Android apps. Read more…

As much as we’re attached to our screens, we still prefer looking people in the eye when we communicate. According to a survey by Ipsos MediaCT’s Motion Picture Group of frequent social media users, 53 percent of people prefer to talk face-to-face when communicating with family. Check out the full chart…

Captive Media, the UK interactive washroom startup, has raised a $700K funding round to help roll out its product — a “pee controlled” media system (yes, you read that correctly) — across major venues, and to bring on board more big-brand advertisers from which it hopes to make the bulk of its revenue, long term. Read more…

Last week I had the distinct privilege of judging the Tomorrow Awards, an advertising award show dedicated to showing the future of communications, today…Now, I cannot reveal what won. But I will share a few pieces that point the way to the future. So in no particular order here are some ideas that captured my imagination in terms of storytelling through technology, social, mobile, and yes, t-shirt. Read more…

One Year Later, YouTube Pulling The Plug On 60% Of Its Original Content Channels

By Matt Burns – TechCrunch

By a show of hands, who regularly watches content from YouTube’s so-called channels? You know, the channels partly funded by YouTube with the goal to make YouTube more like traditional television. So hands up. No one? Yeah, that’s about right. Read more…

Good Day is a volunteer day, where everybody in the agency goes out and volunteers at different charities. Last week, Saatchi LA staff volunteered at 16 charities in LA and Orange Counties. Job duties varied from picking up trash at the beach, walking dogs and cleaning kennels, spreading mulch, cooking and distributing food to sick children, spending time with veterans and the elderly, to equestrian therapy.

A Short Lesson in Perspective

Via Adweek and The San Francisco Egotist

“So was it worth it? Well, of course not. It turns out it was just advertising. There was no higher calling. No ultimate prize.”

That’s one conclusion drawn by Linds Redding in “A Short Lesson in Perspective,” a 3,000-word essay the longtime creative executive wrote on his blog earlier this year, republished by the San Francisco Egotist. Redding was diagnosed with esophageal cancer last year. He died last month at age 52.

Oh. And if your reading this while sitting in some darkened studio or edit suite agonizing over whether housewife A should pick up the soap powder with her left hand or her right, do yourself a favour. Power down. Lock up and go home and kiss your wife and kids.

The Image Economy Cometh: Why Instagram’s New Profile Pages Are A Big Deal

By Samuel Rosen – MediaPost

At first glance, it seems like a relatively “lite” launch: similar to Facebook’s timeline release, you get a big image above your head (comprised of a composite of your photos), seven randomly selected recent images (sorry, no choice in the matter on this one), and a chronological display of your photos (like a Facebook timeline, you might even say).

But first glances are usually short, blurry, and hard to describe. So let’s take a second one.

Facebook Text-Only Posts Beating Photo And Link Posts On EdgeRank

By Kevin Mullett – AllFacebook

I know what you’re thinking: “Text-only posts won’t generate the engagement or shares that links and images do.” For the most part, I would agree, although we have seen more engagement on our best text posts than we have received on mediocre image posts. In other words, quality and creativity still rules the day.

Study: Netflix Dominates Web Streaming During Prime Time

By Advertising Age

Netflix captured 33% of prime-time web viewing based on internet traffic in September, eclipsing Amazon.com, Hulu and Time Warner’s HBO Go by a multiple of at least 18, Sandvine Inc. said in its “Global Internet Phenomena Report” released Wednesday. Read more…

And now you know…

Is “The Pop Up Agency” popping up in your city?

By Erika Petersson – Hyper Island

Six Hyper Island students are now presenting The Pop Up Agency – a creative agency that pops up to work on a brief, challenge or project for a company or an organisation during 48 hours. Read more about the idea and meet one of the founders here.
