Jerome Austria, Creative Director of “The Bark Side,” Joins Deutsch LA as Group Digital Creative Director

February 16, 2012 — Deutsch LA announced today that Jerome Austria, the creative force behind the online video sensation “The Bark Side,” has joined the agency as EVP, group digital creative director for Volkswagen.

Austria was co-executive director of Wieden+Kennedy NY before joining Deutsch LA on a freelance basis in 2011. “Jerome is one of the best hybrid creatives in advertising right now,” says Winston Binch, Deutsch LA partner and chief digital officer. “Through his work on big creative brands like Nike, ESPN, and EA, he’s shown he’s a creative leader for the digital age.”

When he first came to Deutsch LA, Austria was only planning a temporary stay while he sampled other Los Angeles advertising agencies. But as he and his team created such hits as the Super Bowl teaser “The Bark Side,” which now has more than 13 million YouTube views, he decided to make his tenure at Deutsch permanent. “There’s so much energy and momentum happening here right now, and on top of that we’re doing such great work, the decision to stay was really an easy one,” Austria says.

Tapping into a diverse background in the visual arts, engineering, writing, and filmmaking, Austria has established himself as a pioneer of interactive advertising. “Jerome has proven to be as strong at content and storytelling as he is at digital product design. That’s a very rare andimportant thing,” Binch says. “It also doesn’t hurt that he’s a great, charming guy. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the team.”

Austria’s career client list includes some of the world’s most recognizable brands , including Coca-Cola and Nokia. Jerome has collected over 50 international awards, including Cannes Lions, One Show Interactive, the London International Advertising Awards, and the Clios. He was also named one of 50 winners of the coveted ADC Young Guns 6 award.

Some of his career milestones including working on the pitch team that won R/GA the Nike digital business, jump-starting the newest AKQA office in New York, and building a 20-plus interactive team from scratch that provided consulting for the entire Wieden+Kennedy network.

Jerome has also directed an interactive Nike commercial featuring Def Jam recording artist Rihanna as well as a series of interactive video features for Martin + Osa, an American fashion brand. In 2004, his directing debut at the Asian American International Film Festival garnered him the Best Director Jury Prize in the 72 Hour Shorts Program for his 6-minute short entitled “No Regrets.” His current short film entitled “Blush” will be playing at over 5 major festivals around the country.
